Everyone knows that technology is constantly changing at a great rate. This change can be a beautiful thing and really bring beneficial new tools to the forefront. However, not everyone embraces change and some insist on wearing blinders and doing it their way until forced to adjust.
While you might be successful in your abilities, it does not mean you can ignore change and the new tools it brings to help make you more successful. A motivational speaker I recently heard, Les Brown, said: “If you want to keep on getting what you have been getting, keep on doing what you have been doing.” In his speech, he was trying to motivate others to look outside their scope and really embrace how they could be more successful by welcoming change.
This weekend, a family member asked me what was wrong with their phone. I took a look and it turned out they had had it for months and never cleared any messages, web pages or history and they had never installed any upgrades. While this is a very simplistic picture, they were not getting full use of the phone and all because they did not want to make any changes with fear that they were going to ruin it. It turned out that clearing the data opened up space so the phone could run faster and the upgrades gave my family member some new features she likes even better.
I had a similar experience this past week with a manufacturer that was having an internal battle on whether or not to upgrade their ERP software. They feared essentially the unknown. Rather than adding tools and learning how they can be useful (much like focusing on the basics of making my family member's phone upgrades), this manufacturer was considering not upgrading at all, or upgrading and ignoring the new features, both of which are detrimental in the long run.
