IQMS Blog for Manufacturing ERP Expertise
I have heard many theories over the years about what is the best timing for training of employees on a new manufacturing ERP software system. Most companies like to receive a good amount of training up front. However, occasionally, a company will have employees figure out as much as they can on their own before seeking help. Both methods have pros and cons. In the long run, after observing hundreds of implementations, experience has shown me that the best solution falls somewhere in the middle.
At IQMS, we believe change is good. On that note, we are excited to introduce our shiny new website! Besides the obvious design overhaul, one of the largest improvements we made is a better reflection of the variety of manufacturing industries that IQMS serves. From automotive to stamping and molding to machining, IQMS assists nearly every manufacturing process at a global level.
This is a story about John. John has been saving up and manages to upgrade his trusty, but bland Yugo to a shiny new Corvette ZR1. While the Yugo got the job done taking John from place to place, it didn't have the features, performance and just plain "cool" factor of his new Corvette. John was thrilled. He went out and became part of a car club. This group was having a club day at Laguna Seca and this seemed like a great opportunity to see how the new car would perform.
As we enjoy the long days of summer and various holiday weekends, we stock up on cool beverages and fresh snacks to provide for celebratory gatherings and family get-togethers. How do we prepare for summer at the workplace?
Perception often exceeds reality. Such is life. For example: For me, the book is usually better than the movie. Why? I think it is because it is difficult to show people thinking and visually demonstrate what is going through their minds. It simply takes too long to relay thoughts and emotions in a movie compared to a book. However, technology has granted us some incredible, realistic visuals, so now the story can be told in ways that were not possible before. But still, it is rare for me when a movie out does the book.

Recently, an ERP forum I was reading had an active conversation started by a new employee who was attempting to understand the ERP system utilized at his company. This new CFO wasn't part of the initial implementation, training or decision process. He was feeling frustrated because, he concluded, the ERP system wasn't providing the information he needed. He posted his concerns over the lack of seemingly common requirements that weren't being met and his frustration that all ERP systems are the same. The replies to him were unanimous and offered a resounding plea for this new CFO to get training and a reminder that just like all companies are not the same, all manufacturing ERP systems are not the same.
If there is one infallible truth in manufacturing ERP software, it's that you will never run out of things to learn. Technology is always changing and regardless of whether you hate change or thrive on it, it is coming. So how better to deal with it than to take it by the horns and run with it? Learning to embrace change brings with it a certain peace; a "letting go" of sorts that leaves you feeling empowered. It also allows you the confidence to say "bring it on."
